Who can apply
Eligibility is set by the agreement between New Zealand and your country of citizenship, so the rules are not identical for everyone. As a general baseline, applicants need to:
Be a citizen of a country that has a working holiday agreement with New Zealand
Fall within the age range for that country — usually 18 to 30, sometimes 18 to 35
Hold a passport valid for at least 15 months after arrival
Have a return ticket, or enough money to buy one out of New Zealand
Show access to roughly NZD $4,200 in funds for the stay
Hold full medical insurance covering hospitalisation, where required
Meet health and good character requirements
Not be accompanied by dependent children
A note on age
Immigration New Zealand assesses the age limit at the date the visa is approved, not the date you travel — so an application lodged while you are still eligible can still succeed. Because each country’s scheme differs, always confirm the specific criteria for your passport before you pay anything.

*Singapore operates a Work Exchange Programme rather than a standard working holiday visa. Several schemes — including Argentina, Chile, Taiwan, Vietnam and others — run on annual quotas that open on a fixed date and can fill within minutes, so timing matters as much as paperwork.
Country group Age limit Maximum stay Notes
United Kingdom 18–35 36 months 15,000 places a year; can work for the full duration; extend in-country to the balance of 36 months
Canada 18–35 23 months Unlimited places; choose 12 or 23 months at application

Extending your New Zealand working holiday
There are two distinct extension routes, and they are frequently confused. Which one applies depends on your citizenship and on the work you have actually done.
Route 1
Three months of seasonal work
If you are in New Zealand on a current working holiday visa and have completed at least three months of seasonal horticulture or viticulture work, you can apply for a Working Holiday Extension Work Visa for up to three months more. The work must be planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops — nursery work and food processing do not count. This extension can only be granted once, and the fee is NZD $800.
Route 2
UK and Canada subsequent visas
UK citizens who hold a 12 or 23-month working holiday visa can apply in-country for a Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa to reach the 36-month maximum. Canadians on a 12-month visa can extend for up to a further 11 months to reach 23 months. This application is lodged on a paper form rather than online, so allow extra time before your current visa expires.
Timing is everything
Applying for an extension after your current visa lapses leaves you unlawfully in New Zealand, even if the extension is later approved. Build in a buffer of several weeks.
Other New Zealand visa options
A working holiday is often a stepping stone. If you are outside the age range, have already used your working holiday entitlement, or want a longer-term pathway, these are the main alternatives.
Work
Accredited Employer Work Visa
The main temporary work visa for skilled and semi-skilled roles. Your employer must be accredited, the job must meet minimum skill and pay thresholds, and you need a job offer of at least 30 hours a week. Immigration New Zealand lists the fee from NZD $1,540, with 80% of applications decided within about five weeks, and duration depending on the job offered.
Seasonal
Seasonal work visas
Short-term visas for agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and processing, including the Peak Seasonal Visa and Global Workforce Seasonal Visa routes. These are employer-driven and tied to genuine seasonal labour shortages, typically running for several months per season.
Study
Student visa
Enrol in a New Zealand programme and study full-time, with limited work rights during term. Many students then move onto post-study work rights after graduating.
Graduate
Post Study Work Visa
For people who have completed eligible study in New Zealand — up to three years depending on what was studied, with the fee listed from NZD $1,670. From 16 November 2026, eligibility extends to some Graduate Diploma holders and a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa is introduced.
Residence
Skilled residence pathways
The Skilled Migrant Category and related skilled residence pathways offer a route to permanent residence. Criteria and points settings were updated during 2026, so current requirements should be checked against the latest Immigration New Zealand guidance.
Visit
Visitor visa and NZeTA
Citizens of visa waiver countries can enter for business or tourism for up to three months — six months for British citizens — with a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority. Visitors cannot work for a New Zealand employer.
